The Pennsylvania State University, also known as Penn State or PSU, is a public research university with campuses throughout Pennsylvania. Founded in 1855 as the Farmers’ High School of Pennsylvania, Penn State is the state’s only land-grant university and one of the nation’s top research universities. With more than 160 undergraduate majors and more than 550 graduate programs, Penn State offers a wealth of academic opportunities. The university is also home to a thriving athletics program, with more than 800 varsity athletes competing in 26 sports. Penn State’s main campus is located in University Park, about 20 miles from the state capital of Harrisburg. The university also has 19 commonwealth campuses and four special-mission campuses located across the state.
