Sumner College was founded in 1885 by George Sumner and his wife, Sarah. The couple had come to Portland from Boston in 1883, and George Sumner had been a teacher in the Portland public schools. When the couple founded Sumner College, they did so with the goal of providing a quality education to the people of Portland.

The college began with just six students, but it quickly grew. By the early 1900s, the college had an enrollment of more than 500 students. In the years that followed, the college continued to grow, and it began to offer more and more programs.

Today, Sumner College is a thriving institution with an enrollment of more than 1,000 students. The college offers a variety of programs, and it is known for its strong nursing and business programs. Sumner College is accredited by the Northwest Association of Schools and Colleges, and it is a member of the Oregon Association of Independent Colleges and Universities.
