Strayer University was founded by Dr. S. Irving Strayer, a businessman and educator, who saw a need for higher education opportunities for working adults. Strayer opened his first school, Strayer's Business College, in Baltimore, Maryland in 1892. The school offered evening classes for working adults who wanted to earn a business degree.

In 1898, the school expanded to Washington, D.C., and changed its name to Strayer's Evening College. The college continued to grow and expand its programs, eventually adding daytime classes and changing its name to Strayer College in 1909.

In the years following World War II, the college experienced a period of growth, adding new campuses and programs. In 1963, the college was accredited by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools. In 1972, the college was granted university status and changed its name to Strayer University.

Today, Strayer University enrolls over 40,000 students across its 20 locations. The university offers a variety of undergraduate and graduate degrees, including business administration, accounting, information technology, education, public administration, and criminal justice.
