Spalding University is a private university in Louisville, Kentucky. The university is affiliated with the Presbyterian Church (USA) and offers undergraduate and graduate degrees. The university's main campus is located in the historic district of Old Louisville.
Spalding University was founded in 1814 as Louisville Female Academy, making it the oldest women's college in the Southern United States. The academy was chartered by the Kentucky General Assembly in 1832 and renamed Louisville Female High School in 1837. In 1829, the Louisville Medical Institute was founded, making Spalding University one of the first co-educational institutions in the United States. The two schools merged in 1858 and renamed themselves Spalding College in honor of benefactor Mary Spalding. The college was closed during the American Civil War but reopened in 1865.
In 1923, the Spalding College of Education was established and in 1950 the college became a four-year institution. In 1968, the college was renamed Spalding College and began offering graduate degrees. In 1971, the college merged with Kentucky Southern College, a historically black college, and became Spalding University.
Spalding University is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges and the Kentucky Council on Postsecondary Education. The university offers over 30 undergraduate and graduate programs. The university's athletics teams compete in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics and are members of the Mid-South Conference.
Spalding University's main campus is located in the historic Old Louisville neighborhood. The university's campus includes several historic buildings, including the Egan Leadership Center, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The university also has a campus in Radcliff, Kentucky.
