Simpson College was founded in 1860 as Simpson Centenary College by members of the Methodist Episcopal Church. The college was named in honor of Methodist minister Matthew Simpson. The college's first president was James Black, who served from 1860 to 1867. In 1876, the college began offering a four-year program, and in 1878 the college was granted a charter by the state of Iowa. The college began offering a master's degree in education in 1925.
