Shaw University, founded in 1865, is a private, co-educational, historically black university (HBCU) located in Raleigh, North Carolina, United States. It is the oldest HBCU in the Southern United States. Shaw is a member of the Thurgood Marshall College Fund. The university is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. Shaw University awards bachelor's and master's degrees in a variety of liberal arts, business, sciences, and professional disciplines. The school offers doctoral programs in educational leadership, physical therapy, and library science. The primary focus of Shaw's athletics program is on basketball. The Shaw Bears compete in the NCAA Division II Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA).
