Salem College is a four-year liberal arts women's college in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, founded in 1772. It is the oldest women's college in the United States. Salem College was founded in 1772 as a primary school by the Moravians, a Protestant denomination. The school was named after Salem, Massachusetts, the site of the 17th-century Salem witch trials. The school opened with two students and grew quickly. In 1866, the college became a women's college and began to offer college-level coursework. The college expanded its curriculum in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The college began to offer graduate programs in the 1970s.
The college has an endowment of $67 million. The Salem College Historic District, which includes the main campus, was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1974. The district encompasses 22 buildings, including the Main Building, which is the oldest building on campus.
