Saint Peter's University is a private Jesuit university in Jersey City, New Jersey. Founded in 1872, Saint Peter's is the oldest Catholic university in New Jersey and the 28th oldest Jesuit university in the United States. The school is located on a 16-acre (6.5-hectare) campus in the historic Downtown district of Jersey City, just across the Hudson River from Lower Manhattan.
Saint Peter's University offers over 60 undergraduate and graduate programs to more than 3,000 students through its five schools: the School of Business, the School of Education, the School of Nursing, the MacMullan School of Liberal Arts and Sciences, and the School of Professional and Graduate Studies. The University is also home to the Saint Peter's Prep high school, a college prep school for boys in grades 9-12.
Saint Peter's University is accredited by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education. The University's School of Business is accredited by the AACSB International. The School of Nursing is accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education.
Saint Peter's University was founded in 1872 by the Society of Jesus (Jesuits) as Saint Peter's College, a two-year college for men. The college was originally located on Hudson Street in Jersey City, but soon outgrew its space and relocated to its current location on Montgomery Street in 1878. In 1898, the college began offering four-year degrees and became Saint Peter's College.
The college was originally an all-male institution, but began admitting women in 1959. In 1974, the college became a coeducational institution and began offering graduate degrees. In 1986, the college was renamed Saint Peter's University.
Today, Saint Peter's University is a comprehensive university offering a wide range of undergraduate and graduate programs. The University is committed to providing a quality education to its students and preparing them for successful careers.
