Rutgers University-New Brunswick is a public research university in New Brunswick, New Jersey. It is the flagship campus of the Rutgers system and the largest institution of higher education in New Jersey. Rutgers-New Brunswick was established in 1766 as Queen's College, the eighth college chartered in the American colonies and one of the nine Colonial Colleges established before the American Revolution. It was renamed Rutgers College in 1825 in honor of Colonel Henry Rutgers, a Revolutionary War hero and benefactor of the school. The university has three campuses: the flagship New Brunswick campus, as well as campuses in Newark and Camden. The university is organized into 29 academic departments, offering more than 100 undergraduate majors and more than 200 graduate programs. Rutgers-New Brunswick is a member of the Association of American Universities and is ranked among the top 50 research universities in the United States and the top 100 worldwide. The university is also a member of the Big Ten Conference and the Committee on Institutional Cooperation, a consortium of the nation's top research universities.
