Pfeiffer University was founded in 1885 as a women's college by seven Methodist women. The women were inspired by a sermon by Rev. Dr. James E. Pfeiffer, a Methodist minister, who urged the women to open a college to educate women of the region. The women purchased a tract of land in Misenheimer, North Carolina, and the college opened its doors in 1887 with eight students.
The college grew steadily in the years following its founding, and in 1952, the college began admitting men. The college became coeducational in order to better serve the needs of the region. The college continued to grow in the ensuing years, and in 1960, the college moved to its current location in Raleigh, North Carolina.
The university offers a variety of undergraduate and graduate degrees in a number of disciplines, including business, education, nursing, and the liberal arts. Pfeiffer University is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges to award bachelor's and master's degrees.
The university's athletic teams compete in the NCAA Division II Conference Carolinas. The Conference Carolinas is a Division II conference that consists of thirteen schools in North and South Carolina. The conference sponsors nineteen sports, eleven for men and eight for women.
