Founded in 1855, Pennsylvania State University-Penn State Scranton is a public research university with a land-grant designation from the U.S. Department of Agriculture. The university is one of 20 in the Pennsylvania State University System, and it is the only one located in Northeastern Pennsylvania. The university offers more than 80 undergraduate majors and nearly 60 graduate programs. In addition to its main campus in Scranton, the university has a branch campus in Hazleton and an online World Campus. The Scranton campus is home to more than 4,000 students, while the Hazleton campus serves about 1,200 students. The university's athletic teams compete in the NCAA Division I and are known as the Nittany Lions.
