New Jersey Institute of Technology is a public research university in Newark, New Jersey. Founded in 1881 as Newark Technical School, NJIT opened its doors in 1885 with 88 students enrolled in six courses. NJIT is a member of the Association of Public and Land-grant Universities (APLU) and the Association of American Universities (AAU). It is categorized as a Research University with Very High Research Activity (RU/VH) by the Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education.

As of fall 2019, NJIT enrolls over 11,500 students, 2,000 of whom live on campus. The university offers 128 undergraduate and graduate degree programs in six schools and colleges: Newark College of Engineering, College of Architecture and Design, College of Science and Liberal Arts, School of Management, Albert Dorman Honors College, and Ying Wu College of Computing Sciences.
