NUNM was founded in Portland in 1956 as the National College of Naturopathic Medicine (NCNM), and was the first naturopathic medical school in North America. It was founded by naturopathic physicians John Bastyr and Joseph Pizzorno, and Chinese medical doctor T.C.M. Ling. The school was accredited by the Northwest Association of Schools and Colleges in 1971, and began offering a four-year Doctor of Naturopathic Medicine (ND) degree program in 1974. In 2001, the school changed its name to National University of Natural Medicine.
NUNM offers a four-year Doctor of Naturopathic Medicine (ND) degree program, as well as Master of Science in Oriental Medicine (MSOM) and Master of Science in Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine (MSAOM) degree programs. The ND program is a full-time, four-year program that includes two years of basic sciences, two years of clinical sciences, and a year-long internship. The MSOM and MSAOM programs are three-year, full-time programs that include two years of didactic coursework and a year-long clinical internship.
NUNM has a number of unique features, including a teaching clinic, herbal dispensary, research institute, and community education programs. The teaching clinic, called the Center for Natural Medicine, is a full-service primary care clinic that provides naturopathic and Chinese medicine services to the public. The herbal dispensary stocks more than 400 herbs, and provides custom herbal formulas for patients of the teaching clinic. The research institute conducts basic and clinical research on natural medicine therapies, and the community education programs offer classes and workshops on topics such as herbal medicine, nutrition, and stress management.
