It was founded in 1887 as Mount Vernon Academy, a high school and junior college. The academy became a four-year college in 1909 and was renamed Mount Vernon Nazarene College. In 1998, the college was granted university status and became Mount Vernon Nazarene University. The university is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission and offers over 60 undergraduate and graduate programs.
