Founded in 1855, Michigan State University is a public research university in East Lansing, Michigan, United States. MSU was founded as the Agricultural College of the State of Michigan, one of the country's first institutions of higher education to teach scientific agriculture. After the introduction of the Morrill Act, the school became co-educational and expanded its curriculum beyond agriculture. Today, MSU is the ninth-largest university in the United States, with 47,800 students and 2,954 faculty members.
MSU offers more than 200 programs of study in 17 degree-granting colleges. The university's athletic teams compete in Division I of the NCAA and are known as the Spartans. They compete in the Big Ten Conference for most sports.
MSU pioneered the studies of packaging, hospitality business, plant biology, supply chain management, and telecommunications. It is the largest producer of college graduates in the state of Michigan and offers more than 5,000 courses through its 15 academic colleges.
The university has been labeled one of the "Public Ivies," a publicly funded university considered as providing a quality of education comparable to those of the Ivy League. U.S. News & World Report ranks MSU as tied for 74th among all national universities and tied for 39th among public universities. Forbes ranks MSU as the 80th-best public university.
MSU has research agreements with more than 300 companies and has commercialized over 200 technologies. The university spends over $300 million a year on research, much of it funded by the federal government. The university's research expenditures ranked 39th among public universities in the United States in FY 2014.
The Michigan State Spartans football team has won six national championships, the last coming in 1966. The men's basketball team has won two national championships, the last coming in 1979. The women's cross country team has won nine national championships, the most of any team in the country.
MSU has more than 500 student organizations, including cultural groups, honor societies, media organizations, and religious groups. The school's newspaper, The State News, is the largest student-run newspaper in the country. MSU also has a radio station, WKAR, which is the largest public radio station in Michigan.
