Founded in 1862 as a college for the education of ministers in the German Reformed Church, Lakeland is now nonsectarian. The university enrolls about 1,500 full-time and 300 part-time students from over 20 states and more than 30 countries. Lakeland offers bachelor's degrees in over 50 majors and programs, and master's degrees in business administration and education.
Lakeland University was founded in 1862 by the German Reformed Church. The university was created to provide ministers for the German Reformed Church in the United States. The first class of students was made up of just four men. In 1864, the university moved to its current location in Sheboygan, Wisconsin. The university continued to grow throughout the late 19th and early 20th centuries. In 1925, Lakeland became a coeducational institution. In 1962, the university became nonsectarian.
