Lake Superior State University is a public university in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan. It is Michigan's smallest public university. LSSU is the only Michigan university to offer a cooperative education program. The school colors are green and gold and the school mascot is the laker.
LSSU was founded in 1946 as Sault Ste. Marie Junior College. It became a four-year institution in 1955 and was renamed Lake Superior State College. In 1970, it became Lake Superior State University. The school has an enrollment of about 2,600 students.
LSSU offers over 60 undergraduate majors and 15 graduate programs. The most popular majors are business, biology, and engineering. The school is known for its cooperative education program, which allows students to alternate between semesters of full-time study and paid work related to their field of study.
LSSU has a strong athletics program, with teams competing in Division II of the NCAA. The school's hockey team has won four national championships, the most recent in 1988.
LSSU is located on the shores of Lake Superior, the largest of the Great Lakes. The university's campus includes several buildings on the National Register of Historic Places, including the Sault Ste. Marie Power Plant, which is the oldest operating hydroelectric plant in the world.
