Admission Requirements
Johns Hopkins University is a private research university in Baltimore, Maryland. Founded in 1876, the university was named for its first benefactor, the American entrepreneur, abolitionist, and philanthropist Johns Hopkins. His $7 million bequest (approximately $144.5 million in 2020 dollars)—of which half financed the establishment of Johns Hopkins Hospital—was the largest philanthropic gift in the history of the United States at that time. Daniel Coit Gilman, who was inaugurated as the institution's first president on February 22, 1876, led the university to revolutionize higher education in the U.S. by integrating teaching and research. Adopting German university models, Johns Hopkins required all of its graduate students to conduct original research as part of their studies. In addition, the faculty was expected to contribute to the advancement of knowledge in their chosen discipline. The university's first faculty included distinguished scholars such as the chemist Ira Remsen, the zoologist William Keith Brooks, the classicist Basil Gildersleeve, and the economists Henry Carter Adams and John Bates Clark.
Johns Hopkins is organized into 10 divisions on campuses in Maryland and Washington, D.C. with international centers in Italy, China, and Singapore. The two undergraduate divisions are the Krieger School of Arts and Sciences and the Whiting School of Engineering. The university also includes the Peabody Institute, the Applied Physics Laboratory, the Paul H. Nitze School of Advanced International Studies, the Bloomberg School of Public Health, the School of Education, the Carey Business School, and various other facilities.
Admission to Johns Hopkins University is highly selective. For the class of 2025, the university received a record-low 5.5% acceptance rate with 36,674 applicants. The median SAT score for admitted students was 1480 out of 1600 and the median ACT score was 33 out of 36. The middle 50% of admitted students had SAT scores ranging from 1410 to 1560 and ACT scores between 32 and 35. Johns Hopkins requires all applicants to submit either SAT or ACT scores as part of the application process. The university does not have a preference for either test and considers both to be equally valid measures of academic ability and achievement.
In addition to standardized test scores, Johns Hopkins also considers grades, essays, recommendations, and extracurricular activities in the admissions process. The university is looking for students who have demonstrated academic excellence and a commitment to learning. Johns Hopkins also values diversity and looks for students who will contribute
