Heidelberg University (German: Ruprecht-Karls-Universität Heidelberg; Latin: Universitas Ruperto Carola Heidelbergensis) is a public research university in Heidelberg, Baden-Württemberg, Germany. Founded in 1386 on instruction of Pope Urban VI, Heidelberg is Germany's oldest university and one of the world's oldest surviving universities. It is the fifth-oldest university in the Holy Roman Empire after the University of Prague, the University of Bologna, the University of Paris, and the University of Cologne. Heidelberg has been a coeducational institution since 1899.
The university consists of twelve faculties and offers degree programmes at undergraduate, graduate and postdoctoral levels in some 100 disciplines. Its most famous faculty is probably its medical school, which is one of Europe's oldest and has educated such notable figures as Rudolph Virchow, Robert Koch, and Max Planck. Heidelberg is a member of the Coimbra Group, the Europaeum, and the League of European Research Universities. Heidelberg University is closely connected to five Nobel Prize winners. These are Max Planck, Otto Hahn, Emil Fischer, Werner Heisenberg, and Erwin Schrödinger.
According to the latest rankings, Heidelberg is the best university in Germany, and consistently ranks among the world's top 100 universities. Internationally, the university has ranked as the 62nd best university in the world by the Times Higher Education World University Rankings in 2016, and as the 53rd best university by the QS World University Rankings in 2016. In 2015, the university ranked as the 146th best university globally by the Academic Ranking of World Universities. In 2016, Heidelberg was ranked as the 29th best university in Europe by Times Higher Education.
The university's noted alumni include eleven Nobel laureates, four Wolf Prize winners, two Leibniz Prize winners, and nine Turing Award laureates. As of October 2019, a total of 156 Nobel laureates, 18 Fields Medalists and 13 Turing Award laureates have been affiliated with Heidelberg University.
