Greensboro College was founded by the Rev. Peter Doub, a Methodist minister from Virginia. The college's charter was approved by the North Carolina legislature on February 15, 1838, making it the state's first chartered liberal arts college. The first class, consisting of six students, began classes on April 3, 1839.
The college's campus, originally known as the "Temple of Learning", was located on what is now the downtown Greensboro campus of the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. In 1843, the college moved to its current location on College Hill, and the original campus was sold to the state for the establishment of the North Carolina College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts (now North Carolina State University).
Greensboro College was one of the first colleges in the South to admit women and men on an equal basis. It was also one of the first to offer courses in business and journalism.
During the Civil War, the college was closed for two years. When it reopened, it enrolled both Union and Confederate students.
In the early 20th century, the college began to expand its curriculum, adding programs in nursing, pharmacy, and dentistry. It also began to offer graduate degrees.
In the 1960s, the college began to admit African-American students. Today, the student body is diverse, with students from all over the United States and more than 30 countries represented.
Greensboro College is committed to providing a liberal arts education that is grounded in the traditions of the United Methodist Church. The college offers a supportive and nurturing environment that helps students develop the knowledge, skills, and values necessary for success in their personal and professional lives.
