Georgia State University was founded in 1913 as the Georgia School of Technology's Evening School of Commerce. The school was created in response to the growing need for a trained workforce in the rapidly-expanding city of Atlanta. The school's first class consisted of just over 100 students, and was held in a single room in the basement of the old Atlanta City Hall.
The school's first permanent home was a four-story building on Decatur Street, which opened in 1915. In 1923, the school was renamed the Georgia School of Technology, and in 1929 it became a part of the University System of Georgia. In 1930, the school moved to its current location in downtown Atlanta. In 1961, the school was renamed Georgia State University.
Georgia State University has grown rapidly in recent years, with its enrollment more than doubling since 2000. The university's growth has been fueled in part by the expansion of the Atlanta metropolitan area, as well as the university's aggressive recruiting of students from outside the state of Georgia. The university's student body is now one of the most diverse in the nation, with students coming from all 50 states and more than 130 countries.
Georgia State University is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges to award bachelor's, master's, specialist, and doctoral degrees. The university offers more than 250 undergraduate and graduate degree programs through its eight colleges and schools.
