Founded in 1889, Georgia College & State University is a public liberal arts university located in Milledgeville, Georgia, United States. The university is part of the University System of Georgia and is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. Georgia College was founded as Georgia Normal and Industrial College, a women's college, and began offering classes in January 1891. In 1896, the name was changed to Georgia State College for Women. In 1922, the name was again changed to Georgia College, and the school began admitting men. In 1931, the name was changed to Georgia College and State University. In 2013, the university was named one of "The Best 373 Colleges" by The Princeton Review. The university has an enrollment of over 7,000 students, with a student-to-faculty ratio of 18:1. The university offers over 50 undergraduate majors and over 20 graduate programs. The university's athletic teams, known as the Bobcats, compete in NCAA Division II. The university is a member of the Peach Belt Conference.
