Founded in 1896, Finlandia University is a private, not-for-profit, co-educational institution of higher learning located in the city of Hancock, Michigan. The University is affiliated with the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America and is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission. Finlandia University offers bachelor's degrees in business, nursing, and liberal studies, and master's degrees in business administration and education. The University also offers a Doctor of Physical Therapy program and a Doctor of Occupational Therapy program.
Finlandia University's main campus is situated on 100 acres of land overlooking Portage Lake. The campus features several academic and administrative buildings, a library, a chapel, a student center, a gymnasium, and a residence hall. Finlandia University also operates a campus in the city of Detroit, Michigan.
Founded in 1896 as Suomi College by Finnish immigrants, Finlandia University is the oldest institution of higher learning in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. The University was established as a school for Finnish-American immigrants who were seeking to preserve their culture and language. In its early years, the University offered only elementary and secondary level education. In 1925, the University began offering college-level courses and began granting degrees in 1927. In 1960, the University's name was changed to Finlandia University.
Today, Finlandia University enrolls approximately 700 students from across the United States and around the world.
