Emory University is a private research university in Atlanta, Georgia. The university was founded as Emory College in 1836 by the Methodist Episcopal Church. The university is the second-oldest private institution of higher education in Georgia and among the fifty oldest private universities in the United States. In 1915, the college relocated to its present location on a picturesque, tree-lined campus in Atlanta's historic Druid Hills neighborhood. The university's name was changed to Emory University in 1915, and to reflect its growing reputation as a leading research institution, the school was reclassified as a university by the Georgia Board of Regents in 1960.

Today, Emory University is one of the leading research universities in the United States. The university's more than 2,000 faculty members teach and conduct research in more than 150 disciplines. Emory University is home to nine schools and colleges: the Laney Graduate School, the Emory College of Arts and Sciences, the Oxford College, the Goizueta Business School, the School of Law, the School of Medicine, the Nell Hodgson Woodruff School of Nursing, the Rollins School of Public Health, and the Candler School of Theology.

Emory University is a member of the Association of American Universities and is ranked 21st among national universities and 15th among private universities by U.S. News & World Report. The university is also ranked 35th in the world by the Times Higher Education World University Rankings. Emory University's research expenditures totaled $664 million in 2019, ranking the university 28th in the nation. Notable Emory University alumni include former U.S. president Jimmy Carter, civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr., and Nobel Prize laureate John C. Mather.
