Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University-Prescott was founded in 1926 as the Embry-Riddle Company, a flight training school for pilots. The company was founded by John Paul Riddle and T. Higbee Embry, and the school initially operated out of a hangar at the Miami Municipal Airport. In 1939, the company relocated to Prescott, Arizona, and the school was renamed Embry-Riddle Aeronautical Institute. In 1965, the institute was granted university status and the name was changed to Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University.

The university offers a variety of undergraduate and graduate degree programs through its five colleges: the College of Arts and Sciences, the College of Aviation, the College of Business, the College of Engineering, and the College of Security and Intelligence.
