Edward Waters College (EWC) is a private, historically black college (HBCU) in Jacksonville, Florida. It is affiliated with the African Methodist Episcopal Church. EWC was founded in 1866, making it the oldest HBCU in Florida and the second oldest HBCU in the United States. The college is named after its founder and first president, Edward Waters, who was also the first bishop of the AME Church. The college's mission is to "provide a quality liberal arts education that is grounded in the Christian faith and prepares students for leadership and service in a global society."
EWC offers a variety of undergraduate and graduate programs. The most popular majors at the college include business, education, psychology, and sociology. EWC is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges. The college has an enrollment of about 1,000 students.
EWC has a long history of producing leaders in the African-American community. alumni include civil rights leader Rev. Jesse Jackson, Sr., Congresswoman Corrine Brown, and Jacksonville Mayor Lenny Curry.
