East Central University (ECU) is a public university in Ada, Oklahoma. The university is part of the Oklahoma State University System and offers bachelor's and master's degrees in a variety of disciplines. ECU was founded in 1909 as East Central State Normal School, a two-year teaching college. The school became a four-year institution in 1939 and was renamed East Central State College. In 1974, the Oklahoma Legislature renamed the school East Central University. The university has an enrollment of approximately 5,200 students.
ECU is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission and offers over 50 undergraduate majors and 20 graduate programs. The university is organized into five colleges: the College of Business, the College of Education and Behavioral Sciences, the College of Liberal Arts, the College of Nursing and Allied Health, and the College of Science and Mathematics.
The university's athletic teams compete in the NCAA Division II Great American Conference. The ECU Tigers field teams in baseball, basketball, cross country, football, golf, soccer, softball, tennis, track and field, and volleyball. The university's marching band, the Tiger Marching Band, performs at home football games and other events.
ECU is located in Ada, a city of approximately 17,000 people in south-central Oklahoma. The city is home to the headquarters of the Chickasaw Nation, one of the largest Native American tribes in the United States. Ada is also home to the Pontotoc County Courthouse, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
