East Carolina University (ECU) is a public research university in Greenville, North Carolina. Founded in 1907 as a normal school, East Carolina has grown to become the third-largest university in the state of North Carolina. ECU is classified as a doctoral university with "higher research activity" by the Carnegie Foundation, and is one of only four universities in the state to hold this distinction. The university offers bachelor's, master's, and doctoral degrees in more than 150 areas of study, through 13 schools and colleges.
ECU's medical school, the Brody School of Medicine, is the largest in the state and the seventh-largest in the country. The school is affiliated with Vidant Medical Center, the largest hospital in eastern North Carolina and the flagship hospital for the Vidant Health system. The university is also home to the East Carolina Pirates, a member of the American Athletic Conference (AAC) in NCAA Division I athletics.
ECU has a long history of serving the people of eastern North Carolina. The university began as the East Carolina Teachers Training School in 1907, established to meet the needs of the rapidly growing population of the region. The school became East Carolina College in 1951, and was granted university status in 1967.
