Duke University is a private research university in Durham, North Carolina. Founded by Methodists and Quakers in the present-day town of Trinity in 1838, the school moved to Durham in 1892. In 1924, tobacco and electric power industrialist James Buchanan Duke established The Duke Endowment and the institution changed its name to honor his deceased father, Washington Duke.

Duke's campus spans over 8,600 acres (3,500 hectares) on three contiguous sub-campuses in Durham as well as a marine lab in Beaufort. The West Campus—inspired by the college campuses of Oxford and Cambridge—contains Gothic architecture and is adjacent to the Medical Center. The East Campus—home to freshman and sophomore students—features Georgian-style architecture. The main campus—designed largely by architect Julian Abele—includes a mix of Gothic and Georgian architecture.

Duke is consistently ranked among the best universities in the world by numerous university rankings. It was ranked 8th among national universities by U.S. News & World Report in 2019. In athletics, Duke competes in the NCAA Division I and is a member of the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC).

Duke University has produced notable alumni in a wide range of fields, including politics, science, business, literature, and sports. Three Duke alumni have been awarded the Nobel Prize: physicist Ernest Rutherford in 1908, chemist Paul Dirac in 1933, and economist James Buchanan in 1986.
