In 1872, the Methodist Episcopal Church founded Doane University in Crete, Nebraska. The university is named after its first president, John A. Doane. Doane was the first college in Nebraska and is one of the 28 colleges that make up the Council of Independent Colleges. The school enrolls about 1,000 students from 30 states and 15 countries.
