Cleveland State University is a public research university in downtown Cleveland, Ohio, United States. It was established in 1964 and opened in 1965 as Cleveland State University, after the merger of the former Fenn College and Cleveland Institute of Technology. Today it is part of the University System of Ohio, has more than 17,000 students, and offers more than 200 undergraduate and graduate programs. Publicly supported since its founding, the university is governed by a nine-member Board of Trustees. The university has a broad range of undergraduate and graduate programs, as well as a law school and a medical school.

The university was established in 1964 through the merger of the former Fenn College and Cleveland Institute of Technology. Fenn College was Cleveland's first college of higher education, established in 1857 as the Cleveland Manual Training School to offer vocational training to young men. The Cleveland Institute of Technology was established in 1887 as a private, non-profit school to provide technical education to working men. These two institutions were located less than one mile apart in the Midtown neighborhood of Cleveland.

The merger of these two institutions created Cleveland State University, which opened its doors in 1965. The university has since grown to become one of the largest public universities in Ohio, with more than 17,000 students enrolled in over 200 undergraduate and graduate programs. The university is governed by a nine-member Board of Trustees, appointed by the Governor of Ohio.

The university has a broad range of undergraduate and graduate programs, as well as a law school and a medical school. The Levin College of Law was established in 1974 and is one of the nation's top law schools. The Cleveland Clinic Lerner College of Medicine was established in 2004 and is a partnership between Cleveland State University and the Cleveland Clinic, one of the world's leading healthcare organizations.

Cleveland State University is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission. The university's athletic teams compete in the NCAA Division I Horizon League. The university's main campus is located in downtown Cleveland, with additional campuses in the nearby suburbs of Euclid and Westlake.
