Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) is a private research university in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Founded in 1900 by Andrew Carnegie as the Carnegie Technical Schools, the university became the Carnegie Institute of Technology in 1912 and began granting four-year degrees. In 1967, the Carnegie Institute of Technology merged with the Mellon Institute of Industrial Research to form Carnegie Mellon University. The university's 140-acre (57 ha) main campus is 3 miles (5 km) from Downtown Pittsburgh and abuts the Carnegie Museums of Pittsburgh, which includes the Andy Warhol Museum.

Carnegie Mellon consistently ranks among the top 25 universities in the United States and the top 100 in the world. It is home to the world-renowned Robotics Institute and the School of Computer Science, which is consistently ranked as one of the top computer science programs in the world. The university also has highly regarded programs in engineering, business, public policy, and fine arts.

Carnegie Mellon is a member of the Association of American Universities and is classified as an R1 Doctoral University by the Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education. The university has an endowment of over $1.8 billion, making it one of the largest university endowments in the world.
