In 1843, the Sisters of Mercy founded Carlow University in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Carlow is a Catholic, coeducational institution with a strong liberal arts tradition. The university is named for Mother M. Cecilia of the Sisters of Mercy, who was born in Carlow, Ireland.

The university began as a women's college and began admitting men in the 1970s. Today, Carlow enrolls nearly 2,000 students in its undergraduate and graduate programs. The university offers more than 50 majors and minors, as well as five master's programs and a doctoral program.

Carlow's campus is located in the Oakland neighborhood of Pittsburgh, just minutes from downtown. The university's main academic building, St. Agnes Center, houses classrooms, laboratories, the library, and administrative offices. Carlow also has a number of residence halls and athletic facilities.

The university is accredited by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education. Carlow's programs in business, education, and nursing are accredited by national professional organizations.
