Bucknell University was founded in 1846 as the University of Lewisburg. The university was chartered by the Pennsylvania Legislature on February 20, 1847. The charter was granted in response to a petition filed by a group of Baptist ministers from the Susquehanna Valley. The charter was granted on the condition that the university would be located in Lewisburg, Pennsylvania. The university was initially affiliated with the Baptist Church.
The first class at Bucknell University was held on November 13, 1849, with an enrollment of 16 students. The university was initially located in the town of Lewisburg, in a building that now serves as the Lewisburg Borough Building. In 1853, the university moved to its current location on College Hill. The university's first president was James Bucknell, for whom the university is named.
