Bellarmine University is a private university in Louisville, Kentucky. It is a Catholic university in the tradition of the Jesuit order of the Catholic Church. The university was founded in 1950 as Bellarmine College by Archbishop John A. Floersh of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Louisville and named after Saint Robert Bellarmine. In 2000, the Board of Trustees of Bellarmine College unanimously voted to change the name of the institution to Bellarmine University.
The university enrolls approximately 3,700 students in its undergraduate and graduate programs. The campus of Bellarmine University is located in the Highlands-Crusade area of Louisville, Kentucky, on a bluff overlooking Cherokee Park. The school colors are black and white, and the school mascot is the knight.
Bellarmine University is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges to award bachelor's, master's, and doctoral degrees. The university offers more than 70 majors and programs of study through its five academic colleges: the College of Arts and Sciences, the W. Fielding Rubel School of Business, the Annsley Frazier Thornton School of Education, the School of Nursing, and the Graduate School.
The university is home to a number of Centers of Excellence, including the Center for Catholic-Jewish Studies, the Center for Environmental Studies, the Center for Interfaith Relations, and the Rubel School Entrepreneurship Center. In addition, the university operates the Bellarmine Museum of Art, the W. L. Lyons Brown Library, and the W. Fielding Rubel School of Business Executive Education Center.
Bellarmine University is a member of the Kentucky Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (KIAC) and competes at the NCAA Division II level. The university fields teams in men's and women's basketball, cross country, golf, lacrosse, soccer, swimming, tennis, and track and field. The men's and women's lacrosse teams compete in the Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC). The men's soccer team is a member of the Mid-South Conference (MSC).
The Bellarmine Knights men's basketball team has appeared in two NCAA Division II Men's Basketball Tournaments. The Knights have also won four KIAC regular season championships and four KIAC tournament championships. The Bellarmine Knights women's basketball team has appeared in one NCAA Division II Women's Basketball Tournament. The Knights have also won two KIAC regular season championships and two KIAC tournament championships.
The Bellarmine University Knights men's lacrosse team has won two NCAA Division II Men's Lacrosse Championships, in 2011 and 2012. The Knights have also won five GLVC regular season championships and five GLVC tournament championships. The Bellarmine University Knights women's lacrosse team has won two NCAA Division II Women's Lacrosse Championships, in 2011 and 2012. The Knights have also won five GLVC regular season championships and five GLVC tournament championships.
The Bellarmine University Knights men's soccer team has won one NCAA Division II Men's Soccer Championship, in 2010. The Knights have also won four MSC regular season championships and four MSC tournament championships.
