Founded in 1887, Bacone College is a private, four-year liberal arts college located in Muskogee, Oklahoma, with an enrollment of about 1,000 students. The college is affiliated with the American Baptist Churches USA. The school's campus is on the former grounds of the Bacone Indian School, a boarding school for Native Americans operated by the Baptist Home Mission Society.
Bacone College offers bachelor's degrees in a variety of liberal arts disciplines, as well as associate's and master's degrees in business administration and education. The college is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission and is a member of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools.
Bacone College has a long history of serving the Native American community. The school was founded by Almon C. Bacone, a missionary to the Cherokee Nation, with the goal of providing higher education to Native Americans. Over the years, the college has educated many notable Native American leaders, including Wilma Mankiller, the first female chief of the Cherokee Nation, and Charles N. Haskell, the first governor of Oklahoma.
Today, Bacone College continues to serve the Native American community, with a student body that is about one-third Native American. The college offers a variety of programs and services to support Native American students, including a Native American Studies program, a Tribal Leadership program, and a Native American Cultural Center.
