The school's charter was granted by the Pennsylvania General Assembly on April 7, 1815.

Allegheny College's main campus is situated on a 130-acre parcel of land in the residential community of Meadville. The college also owns and operates a 600-acre biological field station in nearby Spartansburg. The college's academic program is divided into four divisions: Fine Arts and Humanities, Social Sciences, Natural Sciences and Mathematics, and Interdisciplinary and International Studies.

Allegheny College is accredited by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools. The college's athletic teams compete in the NCAA Division III and are members of the North Coast Athletic Conference.
