Agnes Scott College is a private liberal arts college for women in Decatur, Georgia. The college was founded in 1889 as Decatur Female Seminary by Presbyterian minister Frank H. Gaines and named after his wife, Agnes Scott. The seminary began offering college-level courses in 1917 and became Agnes Scott Institute in 1921. The institute became Agnes Scott College in 1906, and remains one of only a few historically women’s colleges in the United States.
The college is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. Agnes Scott is ranked as the 21st best liberal arts college for women in the nation by U.S. News & World Report. It is also ranked as the 6th best value among all liberal arts colleges, public or private, in the nation by Kiplinger’s Personal Finance.
The college offers more than 30 majors and concentrations leading to the Bachelor of Arts degree. Agnes Scott is nationally known for its programs in the sciences, social sciences, arts, and humanities.
