In 1969, Strayer merged with the National Institute of Business, a Washington, D.C.-based school founded in 1966. The merger expanded Strayer's programs to include health services administration and computer science. In 1976, Strayer became a publicly traded company.

In 1996, Strayer acquired the Jack Welch Management Institute, an online management education program founded by Jack Welch, the former CEO of General Electric. In 1998, Strayer launched its online division.

In 2013, Strayer Education, Inc. (the parent company of Strayer University) acquired Stratford University, a for-profit university with campuses in Virginia and Maryland.
