The Georgia Institute of Technology is a public research university in Atlanta, Georgia, in the United States. It is a part of the University System of Georgia and has satellite campuses in Savannah, Georgia; Metz, France; Athlone, Ireland; Shenzhen, China; and Singapore. The school was founded in 1885 as the Georgia School of Technology as part of Reconstruction plans to build an industrial economy in the post-Civil War Southern United States. It offered only a degree in mechanical engineering. By 1901, its curriculum had expanded to include electrical, civil, and chemical engineering. In 1948, the school changed its name to reflect its evolution from a trade school to a larger and more capable technical institute and research university.

Today, Georgia Tech is organized into six colleges and thirty-two schools, with about 31,000 undergraduate and graduate students enrolled. It is well recognized for its degree programs in engineering, computing, business administration, the sciences, architecture, and liberal arts. Georgia Tech is a leading research university with top-ranked programs in engineering, computing, and the sciences. It is a member of the University System of Georgia and the Association of American Universities.

The school's main campus occupies about 400 acres (1.6 km2) in the heart of the city of Atlanta. The campus is home to more than 100 buildings, including the Library, Wreck Tech dining hall, the Student Center, several student recreation facilities, and the Georgia Tech Aquatic Center. The main campus is also home to the Georgia Tech Research Institute, a leading research center, and the Georgia Tech Enterprise Innovation Institute, which helps connect students with industry partners. The school also has a number of satellite campuses, including one in Savannah and two in metropolitan Atlanta.

It is also ranked tied for 40th among all colleges and universities in the same publication. The school is ranked tied for 29th in the world by the Times Higher Education World University Rankings. Additionally, it is ranked tied for 33rd in the world and tied for 5th in the United States in the 2020 QS World University Rankings. Georgia Tech is also a top producer of Fulbright Scholars, with 36 scholars in 2019.

The school was established on the site of a former Confederate army base, Fort McPherson, and was led by its first president, John S. B. Milledge. The school offered only a degree in mechanical engineering.
