Northwest College was founded in 1966 as a result of a community effort to establish a two-year college in northwest Wyoming. The college originally operated out of a converted high school building in Powell. In its early years, the college focused on providing access to higher education for residents of the rural communities in the area.

Over the years, Northwest College has grown and expanded its programs and facilities. The college now offers a variety of associate's degrees and certificate programs in a variety of fields, including business, health sciences, liberal arts, and technical sciences. The college also has a campus in Cody, Wyoming.

In recent years, Northwest College has been recognized for its commitment to student success and its efforts to improve access to higher education. The college was named one of the nation's top 150 community colleges by the Aspen Institute in 2013 and was ranked among the top 10 percent of community colleges in the nation by Washington Monthly magazine in 2014.
