New York Community Colleges
New York’s community colleges are part of the State University of New York (SUNY) system, which consists of 64 institutions of higher learning. These two-year colleges provide low-cost, quality education to New Yorkers of all ages, backgrounds, and abilities. Community colleges offer associate degrees, certificates, and other educational programs to meet the needs of the local community.
The first community college in New York was established in 1961, and today there are 30 community colleges in the state. These colleges offer a variety of degree and certificate programs in a wide range of areas, including business, healthcare, technology, and engineering. Academic transfer programs also allow students to transfer credits to four-year institutions.
In addition to traditional classroom instruction, community colleges in New York offer online learning opportunities, including hybrid and completely online courses. Many of these colleges also provide adult education programs to help adults complete their high school education and earn a GED.
At community colleges in New York, students can access financial aid, career services, and other support services to help them succeed. The cost of attendance is low compared to other colleges and universities in the state, making community college an affordable option for many.
