Founded in 1874, Worcester State University is a public university located in Worcester, Massachusetts, United States. Worcester State University offers undergraduate and graduate programs in a variety of disciplines, including the liberal arts, sciences, business, education, and health professions. The university is accredited by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges. Worcester State University is a member of the Massachusetts State University system.

Worcester State University was founded as the Worcester Normal School in 1874. The school was established to train teachers for the public schools of Worcester. The first class of the Worcester Normal School consisted of 37 students. In 1882, the school was renamed the Worcester State Normal School. In 1929, the school was renamed the Worcester State Teachers College. In 1960, the school was renamed the Worcester State College. In 2010, the school was renamed the Worcester State University.

The Worcester State University campus is located on 48 acres (19 hectares) of land in the city of Worcester. The campus consists of 22 buildings, including the May Street Building, the Boynton Hall, the Sullivan Academic Building, and the Ghosh Science Center.

The Worcester State University Foundation is the fundraising arm of the university. The foundation was established in 1971. The foundation raises money for scholarships, capital projects, and other initiatives.

The Worcester State University Alumni Association is the alumni organization of the university. The alumni association was founded in 1874. The alumni association offers a variety of benefits and services to its members, including a career center, discounts, and social events.

The Worcester State University athletics teams are known as the Lancers. The Lancers compete in NCAA Division III. The Lancers are members of the Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference.

The Worcester State University men's basketball team has won two NCAA Division III national championships, in 1977 and 1983. The Worcester State University women's basketball team has won one NCAA Division III national championship, in 1982.

The Worcester State University men's soccer team has won one NCAA Division III national championship, in 1977.

The Worcester State University women's soccer team has won two NCAA Division III national championships, in 1985 and 1986.

The Worcester State University men's cross country team has won two NCAA Division III national championships, in 1974 and 1975.
