Founded in 1997 by 19 U.S. governors, Western Governors University is an online, nonprofit, competency-based university. WGU offers more than 60 undergraduate and graduate degree programs in business, information technology, K-12 teacher education, and health professions, including nursing.

WGU's unique approach to education is based on the belief that students should be assessed on their competencies - what they know and can do - rather than on their time in class or credits earned. This approach has revolutionized the way adult learners are able to earn a degree.

WGU students are able to move through their programs at their own pace, taking as little or as much time as they need to complete their courses and demonstrate their competencies. Students are assigned a faculty member as a mentor who provides one-on-one guidance and support throughout their time at WGU.

WGU's programs are accredited by some of the most prestigious organizations in the country, including the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE) and the Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN).

Since its inception, WGU has awarded more than 60,000 degrees to students in all 50 states and more than 80 countries.
