Founded in 1839, the Virginia Military Institute is a public, four-year, coeducational, residential college located in Lexington, Virginia. The Institute offers a broad range of academic and professional programs leading to undergraduate and graduate degrees. All programs are grounded in the liberal arts and sciences and emphasize leadership development. VMI enrolls cadets (undergraduate students) only and awards bachelor's degrees in 14 disciplines. The Institute also offers eight master's degrees and one doctoral degree through its Graduate Institute. VMI's student body is approximately 1,700 cadets, all of whom are required to live on campus and participate in the Institute's unique system of the Rat Line, intramural sports, and extracurricular activities. The Corps of Cadets, VMI's student body, is organized into a military hierarchy with each cadet holding a position of responsibility. The Rat Line is a system of rules and regulations that helps instill character and discipline in first-year students, known as rats. VMI's intramural sports program is designed to promote physical fitness and sportsmanship among the cadets. The Institute also offers a variety of extracurricular activities, including clubs, organizations, and service opportunities.
