Upstate Medical University is a public medical school in Syracuse, New York. It is one of four medical schools in the State University of New York (SUNY) system. Upstate Medical University is part of SUNY Upstate, which also includes a college of nursing, a college of health professions, and a graduate school. The medical school offers a four-year MD program, as well as PhD and MS programs in the biomedical sciences. The school's mission is to improve the health of the people of New York through education, research, and patient care.
Upstate Medical University was founded in 1834 as the Genesee College of Medicine. It was the first medical school in the state of New York and the second in the nation. The school was originally located in the city of Auburn, New York. In 1950, the school moved to its current location in Syracuse. Upstate Medical University is accredited by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME).
The medical school has a four-year MD program that enrolls 162 students per year. The school also offers PhD and MS programs in the biomedical sciences. The PhD program has an enrollment of 36 students and the MS program has an enrollment of 24 students. Upstate Medical University is a research-intensive institution. The school's research enterprise includes basic, clinical, and translational research. Upstate Medical University is home to the Upstate Cancer Center, the only academic cancer center in Central New York. The Upstate Cancer Center is a National Cancer Institute-designated cancer center.
Upstate Medical University is affiliated with SUNY Upstate Medical University Hospital. The hospital is a 581-bed tertiary care facility that provides a full range of services, including 24-hour emergency care. The hospital is also home to the only Level I trauma center in Central New York. Upstate Medical University Hospital is the teaching hospital for the medical school.
