The University of Utah, located in Salt Lake City, is the flagship institution of higher learning in Utah. Founded in 1850, it is the state's oldest university. The university is classified among "R1: Doctoral Universities – Very high research activity." As of Fall 2015, there are 23,909 undergraduate students and 7,764 graduate students, for an enrollment total of 31,673. The university was established in 1850 as the University of Deseret by the General Assembly of the provisional State of Deseret, making it Utah's oldest institution of higher education. It received its current name in 1892, four years before Utah attained statehood, and moved to its current location in 1900. The university ranks among the top 50 U.S. public research universities by the Center for Measuring University Performance, and is one of the top 100 research universities in the world by the London-based Times Higher Education World University Rankings. The university has also been ranked the 12th most innovative university in the nation by U.S. News & World Report. In addition, the university's Honors College has been reviewed with high distinction by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching. The University of Utah is the only school in the Mountain West to be selected for the prestigious Association of American Universities, an organization made up of the 62 leading public and private research institutions in the United States and Canada.
