The University of San Diego is a private Catholic research university in San Diego, California. Founded in 1949 as the San Diego College for Women, the school was one of the first in the United States to be founded as a coeducational institution. In 1978, it was renamed to its current name. The University of San Diego was founded in 1949 by the Most Reverend Raymond G. Hunthausen, Bishop of San Diego. The school was originally established as the San Diego College for Women, a Catholic institution of higher learning for women. In 1962, the college became a coeducational institution and was renamed the University of San Diego.
