The University of Saint Mary was founded in 1923 by the Sisters of Charity of Leavenworth. The school was established as a women's college and was originally located in downtown Leavenworth. In 1957, the college relocated to its current location on a bluff overlooking the Missouri River. The university became coeducational in 1969 and began offering graduate programs in 1974.
