The University of New Mexico-Main Campus is a public research university in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Founded in 1889 as the state's flagship university, UNM offers bachelor's, master's, doctoral, and professional degree programs in a wide variety of fields, with strong research and scholarship in the sciences, arts, humanities, business, law, and medicine. UNM is a land-grant and space-grant institution and is classified as an R1 Doctoral University by the Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education.
UNM's athletic teams, the Lobos, compete in the Mountain West Conference and are known for their success in basketball, cross country, and track and field. The men's soccer team has won five national championships, and the women's team has won two. The UNM men's basketball team has appeared in the NCAA Division I Men's Basketball Tournament ten times, making it to the Sweet Sixteen four times. The UNM women's basketball team has appeared in the NCAA Division I Women's Basketball Tournament eleven times, making it to the Elite Eight three times.
UNM is one of the nation's leading research universities, with more than $340 million in research and development expenditures in FY 2017. UNM is home to the New Mexico Museum of Natural History and Science, the National Radio Astronomy Observatory, and the National Solar Observatory. UNM's main campus is located on 600 acres (2.4 km²) of land in Albuquerque's University Heights neighborhood, with several branch campuses and research facilities located throughout the state. UNM is a member of the Association of American Universities and is classified as a research university with "high research activity" by the Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education.
